Man (24) charged with producing an axe during assault on a woman

A man has appeared in court tonight charged in relation to an assault earlier this week.

Desmond Hughes (24) with an address in Arvagh, Co Cavan, was brought before Cavan District Court where he was charged with three offences.

Detective Garda Eileen Higgins told the court that Hughes was charged with assault causing harm under section three of the non-fatal offences against the person act.

He was also charged with producing an axe during the dispute under section 11 of the offensive weapons act.

Hughes was charged with a section four theft offence as well before Judge Denis McLoughlin.

The suspect, who appeared in court with a bandage between his eye and an ear, was remanded in custody to appear before Harristown District Court tomorrow.
