A MAN has been charged with the sexual assault of an elderly woman who was attacked as she walked home from bingo.

Liam Smith (21), of Batt Donegan Place, Charleville, Co Cork, had a bail application rejected yesterday after he was charged with the offence, which took place in the north Cork town last Sunday night.

He was arrested at his home by gardai on Wednesday morning, questioned throughout the day and brought to Newcastle West District Court to appear before Judge Mary O'Halloran yesterday.

Det Gda Gary Costelloe gave evidence of charging Mr Smith with sexual assault of a 62-year-old woman at The Turrets, Charleville, Co Cork, on September 18 last. Mr Smith made no reply when charged.

Members of the accused man's family were in court and cried as the charges were read out. The defendant sat alongside them.

Supt Pat McCarthy of Mallow garda station said the State was requesting the young man be remanded in custody until the next sitting.

Solicitor Cathal Lombard made a bail application on behalf of Mr Smith.

Supt McCarthy objected to it and Judge O'Halloran refused the application.

Mr Smith was remanded in custody to Limerick prison until his next appearance before the same court on September 29.

The victim is continuing to recover from her ordeal.
