Law student's drink-drive ban on hold until studies finished

A LAW student caught drinking and driving has had her ban delayed for six months to allow her to complete her studies.

Ciara Gallagher (21) was banned after admitting the charge at Letterkenny District Court.

Insp Michael Harrison said Gallagher, of Derrybeg, Co Donegal, was driving so fast in the town of Falcarragh last May 7 that gardai were unable to stop her.

"Garda attention was drawn by the noise of loud braking and speeding as her car passed the garda station on three occasions," he said. "It was deemed too dangerous to step on to the road to stop her.

Slumped

Officers were later able to follow Gallagher, and when she came to stop outside a pub she was found "slumped over the steering wheel".

Her breathalyser reading was 65mg of alcohol per 100mg of breath, three times the limit.

Defence solicitor Patsy Gallagher told Judge Paul Kelly his client is studying law and business at LYIT in Letterkenny. He said the mother of one had gone out for one drink with friends and "one led to another".

Judge Paul Kelly banned Gallagher for three years, with the ban to begin on August 1. He also fined her €400 for drink-driving and failing to have insurance on another date last May.
