Jury sent out in nurse arson attack trial

THE trial of a man accused of ordering an arson attack on the home of a prison nurse while behind bars has reached its closing stages.

William Ryan (53), of Ballygarett, Gorey, Co Wexford, is alleged to have arranged the arson attack from his cell because of a row with the nurse over haemorrhoid cream. Ryan was serving a sentence for public order offences at the time.

Mr Ryan has pleaded not guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to using a mobile phone from Wheatfield Prison on September 3, 2007 and two counts of arson the following night.

Judge Patrick McCartan ruled there was not enough evidence to support the charge of using a mobile phone. The jury will begin their deliberations today.
