A jury in the trial of a woman charged with the murder of her former lover has been sent home and will resume deliberations on Monday morning.
Maura Thornton (31), from Inverin, Connemara, denies the murder of US national Kevin Joyce (59) at a rented apartment at Upper Salthill on Sunday, July 31, 2011.
The jury spent just under two hours deliberating but when they failed to reach a unanimous verdict by 4pm, Mr Justice Barry White sent them home.
Ms Thornton never denied when interviewed by gardai that she had inflicted 18 stab wounds on Mr Joyce. Blaise O'Carroll defending, told Galway Central Criminal Court his client's defence was one of provocation. He said Mr Joyce had stalked his client.
