Judge 'stays his hand' on jailing of landowner
A JUDGE has agreed to "stay his hand" over jailing a landowner for failure to obey orders to remove all scrap vehicles from his property after a court heard significant progress has been made in clearing the site.
Gerard Reid had been threatened with three months' imprisonment by High Court president Mr Justice Nicholas Kearns unless he removed all vehicle and other unauthorised materials from the land at Ironhills, Suncroft, Co Kildare.
Kildare County Council had obtained orders last year compelling him to remove around 1,100 cars, buses and trucks.
The judge heard last March the number had been reduced to 580, some 484 of which were cars. Yesterday, he was told the number was now down to around 225-240, although Mr Reid's lawyer said this was nearer to 140.
