Owen Orr (20), of St Johnston, Co Donegal, was given a three-year jail term suspended for three years at Letterkenny Circuit Court.

He was charged with endangerment after Sgt Eunan Walsh had to jump into a garden to avoid being mown down when Orr, then 17, drove at him in Letterkenny in 2010.

Judge John O'Hagan said at the last hearing: "A similar incident occurred here in Co Donegal and a garda lost his life. The car didn't miss – it hit him."

Gda Robbie McCallion died when he was hit by a car during an attempted robbery in Letterkenny in March 2009.
