A Porche-driving playboy caught up in a violent row over a high-class prostitute has been spared jail.

Darren Branter (41), of Cove Apartments, Mussenden, Co Derry, was facing the prospect of going to jail after he was found guilty of assaulting his former partner shortly before Christmas 2015.

But Branter was handed 18 months probation when he appeared at Coleraine Magistrates Court this week.

Friends say the businessman, originally from Newbuildings outside Derry, sighed with relief when he heard his sentence as he was convinced he was going to jail.

Last month at the same court, Branter – who runs his own engineering company – was found guilty of assaulting his former partner after she quizzed him about his affair with call girl Grazyna Makowska.

Branter and his lover now live together in a luxury penthouse apartment overlooking the beach at Mussenden, Dowanhill.

Known as ‘Gina’, Makowska set up shop in Derry two years ago, selling sex from a city centre apartment overlooking the River Foyle.

Branter soon became one of the sex worker's best customers and it wasn’t long before they began a relationship.

But when Branter’s partner began asking awkward questions, he lashed out at her, grabbing her by the throat and threatening to kill her.

He also threatened to damage her property.

After listening to all the available evidence, a judge at Coleraine Court found him guilty.

On Monday, Branter – who friends say was expecting a custodial sentence – was told he would have to spend the next 18 months on probation.

One of Branter’s friends told the Sunday World: “Darren is very happy with the sentence. It means he’s now able to get on with his life.”

When the Sunday World caught up with Branter at his Newbuildings workshop, he declined to discuss his love affair with Makowska.
