A former magazine writer has withdrawn her claim of unfair dismissal against Independent News and Media (INM).

Writer Catherine Murphy was awarded €55,000 by an Employment Appeals Tribunal (EAT) for a case she had taken against the publisher of this newspaper earlier this year.

However, the award was later declared void - as the company had not been made aware that the hearing was taking place.

The dispute between Ms Murphy - who wrote for the 'Weekend' magazine of the Irish Independent for 15 months beginning in August 2011 - and INM was due before the tribunal yesterday.

However, an agreement was reached by both parties before the hearing took place.

Ms Murphy has worked as a journalist for more than 30 years.

She later worked as a freelance journalist, submitting features to a range of national newspapers.

During her last appearance before the tribunal, she claimed she was offered a full-time position, writing cover stories or 'big reads' for 'Weekend' magazine.
