Ikea seeks injunction on union use of logo

IKEA is to seek a High Court injunction today preventing the MANDATE trade union from using the furniture giant's logo on union recruitment leaflets.
Inter Ikea Systems BV says the retail, bar and administrative workers' union is infringeing its registered trade mark by using its "iconic" logo on leaflets handed out to customers at the recently opened Ballymun store in Dublin.
The leaflets were also left on customer and staff vehicles in its car parks, it claimed.
The injunction would restrain the union from portraying itself as having been endorsed by Ikea or from having any association with it.
In an affidavit, Cecilia Emanuelson, Ikea's trademark manager, said the company was not looking to prevent the union from recruiting or organising.
She said Ikea Ballymun was run on a franchise basis and Inter Ikea Systems had no role in the day-to-day running of the store.
