Gary Walsh pleads guilty to manslaughter of former rugby club captain
A DUBLIN man has pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of a former rugby club captain.
Prosecution barrister Paddy McCarthy SC told the Central Criminal Court this morning that the State accepts the plea.
Gary Walsh (32) with an address at Ravensdale Park, Kimmage, Dublin 15 had been charged with the murder of Cathal Sweeney at a house in Terenure on February 8th, 2014. At a brief hearing he pleaded not guilty to murder, but guilty to manslaughter.
Mr Walsh went on trial on two previous occasions in relation to Mr Sweeney's death.
Mr Sweeney died following a row at a flat at Ashdale Gardens in Terenure.
Brendan Grehan SC, acting for Mr Walsh, said his client has spent 22 months in custody but is currently on bail and has complied with all bail conditions. He asked for sentencing to be adjourned to allow Mr Walsh to complete a bus driving course.
Justice Patrick McCarthy ordered a probation report and adjourned the sentencing hearing to July 3 when the victim's family will make a statement to the court.
