GARDAI called to a house found a 10-week-old German Shepherd puppy that had been gutted with a large knife, a court was told.
Judge Leo Malone was told during a bail hearing at Cork District Court for Shane Power (24), of no fixed abode, that the dead dog was lying at Mr Power's feet in a property at Willow Bank View, Fairhill, Cork.
Mr Power has been charged with burglary.
Garda John O'Connell and Garda Keith Aher visited the address at 9pm on Wednesday.
Gda O'Connell said he found the butchered dog lying in a pool of blood.
"It had been stabbed a number of times. The puppy was dead at his (Mr Power's) feet – it had been gutted down the stomach," he said. "He took a bread knife to the dog."
The defendant's sister, Ciara Power (21), of Virginia Crescent, Hennessy Road, Waterford, was also arrested at the scene.
Mr Power made no reply when later charged with burglary contrary to the Criminal Justice Theft and Fraud Offences Act.
Ms Power was also charged with burglary.
Gardai said they had no objection to Ms Power being remanded on bail but asked for Mr Power to be remanded in custody.
Mr Power was remanded in custody and is due to appear again before Cork District Court on January 22.
