Four youths charged in relation to two violent assaults in Athlone

Four males, all teenagers, have been charged by gardai in relation to two violent incidents which took place in Athlone on Tuesday.

The four youths, aged 15, 16, 17 and 18 years will appear before a special sitting of Mullingar District Court tomorrow morning.

At approximately 1.30am on Tuesday morning a male taxi driver, aged in his 70's, picked up two males and drove to a residential address where he was threatened and assaulted by his passengers.

 He sustained a number of stab wounds during the incident.

 Two males fled the scene on foot with a small amount of cash.

 The injured driver was taken to Portiuncula Hospital, Ballinasloe and has since been discharged.

At approximately 5.45pm three youths armed with a firearm and an iron bar entered a shop on Ballymahon Road.

They threatened and assaulted the shop keeper, a male aged in his 70s, before leaving the scene on foot empty handed.

The injured man was also taken to Portiuncula Hospital where he was treated for head injuries.

He was later discharged.
