A JUDGE has jailed a former Fine Gael councillor for breaching barring orders, accusing him of giving gardai and the courts "the runaround".

Gareth Reid (31) from Lawnsdale, Ballybofey, Co Donegal, was remanded in custody by a judge in Letterkenny District Court.

He is acc-used of the repeated har-assment of his ex-partner over several months earlier this year.

Judge Paul Kelly revoked Reid's bail after hearing evidence from a garda that the former politician had allegedly made a number of phone calls to his ex-partner in breach of a barring order as well as bail conditions.

Garda Rory Vaughan said he and other officers were forced to break down the door of Reid's home on Sunday after he failed to answer the door.

Reid had also failed to answer numerous phone calls as required under his bail conditions, the court was told.

The Fine Gael member lost his seat in the 2009 local elections.

The alleged victim said Reid had visited her at work and made 30 calls last Saturday night and Sunday morning.

Defence solicitor Kieran Dillon said his client had denied the allegations relating to last weekend.

Judge Kelly remanded Reid in custody until next Monday.
