First ever person charged with assisting suicide here to go on trial today

A WOMAN will go on trial later today charged with assisting the suicide of another woman in Dublin four years ago.

Gail O’Rourke (43) of Kilclare Gardens in Tallaght is accused of aiding, abetting, counselling or procuring the suicide of Bernadette Forde between March 10th  2011 and June 6th 2011.  

She is charged under Section 2 (2) of the Criminal Law (Suicide) Act 1993.

She is the first person in the history of the state to be charged with the offense, and if convicted could face up to 14 years in jail.

There was extensive disclosure involved in the case, and it last appeared before the courts almost a year ago.

The trial is expected to last up to two weeks.
