Fireman settles harassment action
A FIREMAN who claimed he suffered post traumatic stress disorder as a result of alleged intimidation and harassment while working in a fire station in Mayo has settled his High Court action for damages.
Eugene Carey who was the station officer of Ballina fire station claimed he was subjected to verbal abuse and anonymous letters and his orders were ignored.
Mr Carey had sued Mayo County Council claiming between 1992 and 2001, he was caused to suffer and sustain mental distress, anxiety, illness, loss and damage as a result of verbal abuse, harassment and intimidation which he alleged was inflicted on him by various fellow employees of the defendant.
He had claimed the Council failed to act on complaints made by him and failed to have in place an adequate anti-bullying programme.
Mayo County Council contended the action was statute barred and denied all the claims.
When the case was called before Ms Justice Iseult O'Malley today she was told it had been settled and could be struck out.
