File for DPP due on drug dealer’s shooting, inquest told

GARDAI investigating the fatal shooting of a drug dealer whose body was found in a ditch expect to have a file ready for the DPP shortly, Dublin Coroner’s Court has been told.

John Paul Joyce (30), from Grove Lane off the Malahide Road in Coolock, Dublin, was found in a ditch at Dunbro Lane in north Dublin on January 9, 2010, having been fatally shot. The father of two had been missing for several days before his body was found. Joyce was a known criminal and his death is believed to be related to a gangland feud. His brother, Thomas Joyce, had been gunned down at the family halting site seven months earlier.

Inspector Pat Leahy, of Coolock Garda Station, told Coroner Dr Brian Farrell that the investigation into Joyce’s death is at an “advanced stage”. Gardai hope to be in a position to forward a file to the DPP by the end of the summer, he said.

Dr Farrell adjourned the inquest for further mention on December 13.
