A man in his 30s will receive psychological and medical treatment after being charged with assaulting his four children.

The defendant was charged with four counts of assault causing harm, alleged to have occurred on June 4, 2016. The man wore a grey T-shirt and grey tracksuit bottoms for the special sitting of Wicklow District Court in Bray late on Saturday night.

During the short appearance, he sat shaking with his head in his hands.

Solicitor Kieran Conway presented a statement of means to Judge Gerard Furlong, who granted legal aid.

Superintendent Paul Hogan asked that the defendant be remanded in custody. Mr Conway made no application for bail.

Judge Furlong remanded the matter to Cloverhill District Court on Thursday, June 9. He ordered a psychiatric evaluation as soon as possible.

He added that the defendant is to obtain all appropriate psychological and medical assistance upon arrival at his place of detention.
