Father and son face assault charges

Conor Kane

A FATHER and son burst into a neighbour's house where they assaulted and threatened to kill a young woman living there, a court heard yesterday.

Joseph Kirwan (56) and Trevor Kirwan (30), both of 18 Edmund Rice Estate, Callan, Co Kilkenny, appeared before Kilkenny Circuit Court.

Agnieszka Meleskska (27), originally from Poland, told the court she was alone in the house when the men burst in. They held her by the throat, called her a "bitch" and told her to go back to her "own country".

She said she was terrified, and that the men "shouted at me they were going to kill me and Declan".

The court heard Ms Meleskska managed to get out of the house and that Mr Burke drove into the estate. However, he was forced to drive away after Mr Kirwan smashed the window of his van with a rock.

Both men are charged with assaulting Ms Meleskska and with threatening to kill her at her house in Edmund Rice Estate, Callan, on June 25, 2008.

They are also charged with criminal damage and with trespass with an iron bar. They have both pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The trial continues before a jury today.
