Fatal heart attack was triggered by cocaine

A man collapsed and died from a heart attack after he ingested cocaine that had been mixed with a cattle medicine.

Post-mortem toxicology tests revealed that Derek Kiely (37) had traces of cocaine laced with worm-treatment medicine in his system. Mr Kiely collapsed at his home at Leesdale Manor, Model Farm Road, Co Cork, on January 2 last.

A Cork Coroner's inquest yesterday heard that such fatal reactions to cocaine can be triggered by the ingestion of even the smallest quantity of the drug.

Coroner Dr Myra Cullinane described the case as a tragedy for the family. She recorded a verdict of death by misadventure and extended her sympathies to the Kiely family.
