Ex-garda to face trial accused of stealing cannabis from station

A FORMER garda has been sent forward for trial charged with stealing cannabis from a garda station and perverting the course of justice.

Stephen Cooper (28), of The Green, Kingswood Heights, Tallaght is charged with making false statements implicating another in the theft of a vehicle and, as a result, perverting the course of justice between August 19, 2010 and October 21, 2011.

He is also charged with deception of Axa Insurance, in that he made a false insurance claim arising out of an incident on September 15, 2010.

Finally, he is also charged with stealing a bag of cannabis herb worth €560 from Sundrive Garda Station on May 27, 2010 and possession of cocaine for sale or supply at Ormond Quay on January 31, 2011.

The trial, which is expected to last up to five weeks, is listed to begin on January 13, 2014, at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court.

Mr Cooper has indicated that he will enter not guilty pleas to the charges. The case is listed for mention on March 4 next to hear details of disclosure relating to internal disciplinary proceedings which were partly initiated against the former garda.

A pre-trial hearing will take place on November 21, 2013.
