The driver of a car that crashed into a van, killing four of her young friends, has been charged with dangerous driving.

Dayna Kearney (21), from Cross Neen, Carlow, appeared before Athy District Court in Co Kildare yesterday.

She was charged in relation to the incident that occurred on the N78 Athy Link Road at Burtown on January 6, 2015.

Aisling Middleton, Niamh Doyle and Gemma Nolan, all 19 and from Athy, were killed alongside their friend Chermaine Carroll (20) from Carlow.

Ms Kearney was left fighting for her life, and spent weeks in intensive care, after the car she was driving collided with the van.

The case was adjourned to April 12.
