A "DESPICABLE" teenager who stole a handbag containing €600 from an 84-year-old woman who she offered to help with her shopping has been ordered to pay her victim €1,000 compensation.
The 17-year-old girl, who is a member of the Travelling community, was also found with a stolen €3,000 wedding dress and tiara in her bedroom.
Judge Anthony Halpin told Tallaght District Court: "To lure an old woman into thinking that a good deed is to be done and then the woman drops her guard and her bag is taken is pretty mean. It is despicable. It is the kind of crime that people find revolting."
The teenager, with addresses in Tallaght and Kildare, pleaded guilty to stealing a handbag containing €600 from a supermarket in Churchtown on May 6, 2012.
