A dealer importing cocaine from the US has been jailed for 12 years and his girlfriend for eight after they were caught in a sting operation.
They had almost half-a-million euro of the drug in Gort, Co Galway, two years ago, a court heard.
Alan Graham (40), from Davin Gardens, Caherdavin, Co Limerick; and his girlfriend Susan Ryan (25), same address, pleaded guilty before Galway Circuit Criminal Court in November to the possession of cocaine for sale or supply at Glenbrack, Gort, in south Co Galway, on November 2, 2010.
The pair also pleaded guilty to having another €210,000 of cocaine for sale or supply at Goaley's farmhouse, Annaghdown, in north Galway, on November 4, 2010.
Det Inspector Gerry Roche told the sentencing hearing yesterday that Graham was a "trusted lieutenant" in the drugs fraternity who had access to vast amounts of drugs, cash, property, a high-powered jeep and motorbike, along with a speed boat on the Shannon.
The couple had amassed nearly €1m in cash and drugs.
Gardai found €210,000 of cocaine and €200,000 cash in a farmhouse in Annaghdown and they found €92,000 cash hidden under the bath in a house in Moycullen. Judge Raymond Groarke sentenced Graham to 12 years in prison. He sentenced Ryan to eight years.
