A judge has granted court protection to a Co Clare father and his two young children after hearing that the children's mother threatened to kill their eight-month-old daughter last Christmas Eve.

At the family law court in Ennis, Judge Patrick Durcan granted a safety order to the man against his wife.

The safety order also affords court protection to the married couple's two children.

The woman continues to live with her husband and their children and the safety order prohibits her from any further violence or any threats of violence.

In evidence, the man said that his wife threatened to kill their eight-month-old daughter last Christmas Eve if the husband didn't take the baby girl out for a walk when taking out their son.

The man said that his wife followed up on her Christmas Eve threat with throwing a side table at him on Christmas Day "while I had our young son in my arms".

After hearing the evidence, Judge Durcan said that he would grant a two-year safety order.
