Council writes off developer's €500,000 debt
A CITY council has been forced to write off a debt of almost €500,000 owed by a property developer – because of a typographical error.
The error by Galway City Council was included in a grant of planning permission for a residential development on the eastern side of the city.
The typo meant development levies did not need to be paid on nearly 100 homes. A condition of planning permission was that levies were to be paid in respect of each apartment, but it failed to include houses, which formed most of the development.
The council brought High Court action against Harrmack Developments to recover €467,389. However, it has now been revealed that the council dropped the action earlier this year following legal advice.
