A COUPLE who operated Northern Ireland's largest tax scam have been jailed for "cheating the Revenue" for 17 years out of more than £4.5m (€5m).
Belfast Crown Court judge Mr Justice Hart yesterday sentenced 56-year-old Gerry Small to three and a half years, while his 50-year-old wife Mary, on whom he tried to "shift" the blame, got two and a half years.
He also ordered the couple, of Cullenramer Road, Dungannon, and parents of three children, to pay nearly£4m compensation.
The court had been told that they siphoned off cash and cheques from their Grey Stone Builders supply business and salted the money away in off-shore bank accounts both in the Isle of Man and Ireland.
