A MAN avoided jail yesterday for breaking into an aviary where his accomplice callously slaughtered a dozen exotic birds.
Mark Boyle (27) watched as Glen Clonroy (20) strangled and plucked the heads off 12 birds worth €2,670.
Conroy, of Mourne View, Skerries, had previously received a two-year jail sentence, with one suspended, for criminal damage at the Newbridge House aviary in Donabate, Co Dublin.
Boyle, of St Cronans Lawns, received an 18 months jail sentence after he pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to burglary with criminal damage on April 13, 2006. He had 13 previous convictions, including trespass, theft and burglary.
On hearing that he had raised 600 compensation and had "turned a corner'', Judge Ryan suspended the sentence.
