Victor Gilmore (42), of Vow Road, Ballymoney, Co Antrim, was competing in the Killalane Road Race at Skerries, Co Dublin, on September 12, 2010, when the accident happened.

Dublin City Coroner's Court heard it was a high-speed race with competitors travelling at speeds in excess of 100mph on the public road, which had been closed off for the event.

Mr Gilmore, an experienced motorcyclist, lost control of his bike at an approach to a bend. The bike skidded along the ground and hit the bale.

The Coroner Dr Brian Farrell recorded a verdict of death by misadventure.
