Alcoholic thief asks judge for prison sentence
A MAN who burgled a school asked a judge to send him to prison to get help for his alcohol addiction.
Michael Ward (24) pleaded guilty to stealing property worth €2,000 when he broke into Gaelscoil Bhun Crannacha in Buncrana, Co Donegal, on June 13. Ward, from Red Row, Buncrana, was out on bail at the time facing other burglary offences.
Buncrana District Court heard that a laptop, a camera and fundraising money were taken from the school.
Solicitor Patsy Gallagher said his client had received some help for his addictions while in Castlerea Prison before but was slipping again.
Ward was sentenced to nine months in prison and ordered to get assistance in undertaking a treatment programme.
