At least three raiders targeted the store owner and his wife in their home a few miles outside Castlebellingham, Co Louth, at about 6am on Friday.

The wife was tied up and the man ordered to go to the post office in the town and remove the cash.

The store owner took the money from the premises when an employee, the postmistress, arrived to open up.

Gardai said the man's wife was not harmed but was left severely traumatised by her ordeal.

The money was left at a drop-off point in the town before the woman was released at 9am.

Gardai said it is believed at least one of the raiders was armed.
