GARDAI have launched an investigation after a gay couple claimed a security guard called them "faggots" when they kissed in a Dublin shop.
One of the men claimed he and his friend were thrown out of the Spar convenience store in Dublin city centre after the staff member approached them.
He claimed the security guard told them to "take it back into the George, you faggots" after they went in to buy a sandwich roll in the early hours of Monday morning.
Gardai said no arrests were made but they are investigating the incident. Spar said it was also investigating the allegations after finding itself at the centre of a social media storm.
Spar Ireland said it was aware of an alleged incident in a Spar store, which is independently owned and operated.
"Spar Ireland prides itself on respect for all regardless of gender, nationality, colour, creed or sexual orientation and abhors any action that contravenes that," it said.
"We are currently working with the independent store owner, the gardai and the private security company to establish the facts of the alleged incident."
