Councils to set own rate of property tax

Councils will eventually be able to set the rate of property tax in their county, resulting in different levels across the country, Environment Minister Phil Hogan said.
The property tax will come into effect next year with the rate yet to be decided upon by the Government.
The tax to replace the household charge will be collected by the Revenue Commissioners.
Mr Hogan said the property tax will become an increasingly important source of income for local authorities.
In years to come, councils will decide the rate of the tax in their own area.
"Each local authority can have a different level of property tax," he said.
