Copper gang stage biggest raid to date

A GANG of roaming copper thieves have carried out their most daring raid to date.

The gang stole a staggering 1,000 metres of heavy copper wire at four different locations on the same night in Co Donegal.

The raid is estimated to be the 20th such robbery in the county in the last four years.

The raids between Milford and Cranford left dozens of homes without phonelines, including pensioners who could not operate their emergency personal alarm systems.

"We would ask people who notice workmen near telephone wires out of hours and late at night to contact us," said Garda Inspector Michael Harrison.

Although a number of arrests have been made in relation to the series of thefts in recent months, nobody has been charged with the robberies.
