Author Tim Pat Coogan (right) has been granted a 10-year non-immigrant visa to the US after an intervention by Senator Chuck Schumer of New York, writes John Spain.
There was widespread anger when it emerged that the best-selling author had been refused a visa to visit the US on a tour to promote his new book, 'The Famine Plot', which accuses Britain of conducting a policy in the 1840s that amounted to "genocide" and says the disaster was an early example of "ethnic cleansing."
Mr Coogan suggested last week that the refusal might have been the result of British pressure.
As a result of the travel ban, Mr Coogan's US book tour, scheduled for this week, had to be cancelled.
