Thousands of fans of the Connemara pony have flocked to Clifden where many were planning to 'post' the loveable ponies home.

More than 4,000 visitors including a strong overseas contingent made their way to the remote Galway town for the 2015 Connemara Pony Festival, where even deluges of rain couldn't dampen the mood.

Six-hundred ponies are taking part in the three-day show.

Scott McGuffin, a member of the American Connemara Pony Club, who has attended for the past decade, said: "We just love coming here. Over the years we've made so many friends who all return.

"It's a wonderful celebration of these ponies which are a pleasure to keep."

Mr McGuffin said the group were buying ponies and planning to 'post' them home.

"It's fairly common to bring back ponies. There are custom-made horse containers that are then brought back home on flights from FedEx and others," he said.
