Confusion over free pre-school scheme

PARENTS are still confused over their children's eligibility under the free pre-school scheme, it was claimed last night, writes John Walshe.

The Children's Rights Alliance said it welcomed Minister Barry Andrew's decision to extend the registration period to January 29. However, it said some parents were still unsure about the scheme.

"To be clear. Children born from February 2, 2005, to June 30, 2006, will qualify this year. Children born between February 2, 2006, and June 30, 2007, will qualify for the free preschool year in September 2010.

"This is an excellent scheme . . . and we would encourage parents to register," said Jillian van Turnhout, chief executive of the alliance.

Meanwhile, Cogan Preschools has announced that it is opening 28 preschools around Ireland. The move will create 300 jobs.
