Confidential mental health records of patients found in vacant house

Highly sensitive medical records of patients who attended mental health services were found at a vacant house in Co Wexford.
The confidential records were discovered by a couple who went to view a property to rent in The Moyne, Enniscorthy.
Local gardai were called to the scene and took the files away.
The HSE confirmed that it was contacted by a member of the public, alleging that confidential documentation relating to clients of its services had been located in a house in the Wexford area.
All such documentation is now in the possession of the HSE.
The HSE said they are taking the matter extremely seriously and has initiated an investigation.
The incident is now in the hands of the Data Protection Commissioner and the HSE said they will be co-operating with the Data Protection Commissioner’s office as to any follow up actions that need to be taken.
