Commuters facing another day of detours and closures

Published 18/05/2011 | 05:00

COMMUTERS will today be forced to take lengthy detours around Dublin because of widespread road closures in place for the visit of Queen Elizabeth.

The queen will visit the Guinness Storehouse, Government Buildings, the Irish War Memorial Garden at Islandbridge, and Croke Park before a state dinner tonight in Dublin Castle.

A series of road closures will result in disruptions to public transport services and severely restrict access to the city for drivers.

While full services will operate on the Luas Green Line, there will be restrictions on the Red Line.

A normal service will operate from Tallaght to Connolly Station/The Point from 5.30am to 9am; services will only operate between Tallaght and Blackhorse between 9am and 11.30am with services into the city suspended.

Full services will resume from 11.30am but passengers have been warned to expect delays during the day.

Rail passengers will be largely unaffected, but there will be some disruptions at key points.

There will be half-hour suspensions of DART and commuter services between Connolly and Pearse stations between 10.45am-11.15am, 2.30pm-3pm and 3.30pm-4pm.

During these times, northside services will operate from Howth/Malahide and Drogheda to and from Connolly Station; and southside services will operate from Bray and Greystones to and from Pearse Station.

Maynooth services will not serve Drumcondra station between 10.30am and 4pm, but a full schedule will operate.

Bus Eireann also said that diversions and route changes would be in place between 9.30am and 10pm as the north and south quays and Beresford Place are closed during this time.

Expressway routes 1, 4, 7, 8, 12, 20, 22 and 23 and local routes 107, 109, 111, 115, 120, 121, 126 and 130 will operate via the Port Tunnel and M50 to and from Busaras.

Routes that normally operate to and from Wilton Terrace, Kildare Street, St Stephen's Green and Ballsbridge will operate from Busaras only, while routes 103 and 105 will operate from Parnell Square West.

Dublin Bus also expects diversions with more than 80 routes affected.

Canny motorists chose to leave the car at home and use public transport to get into Dublin yesterday.

Dublin Bus, Luas, Iarnrod Eireann and Bus Eireann all said that passenger numbers on commuter routes were up, however details on the numbers will not be available until today.
