GARDAI are investigating after the body of an elderly man was discovered in Cork this afternoon.
A Garda spokesperson confirmed Gardai are at the scene in Cloyne after the man's body was discovered just before noon.
It is believed he sustained suspected stab wounds.
The victim is aged in his early 70s.
The services of the state pathologist have been requested by Gardai in Midleton.
The course of the investigation will be determined by the findings of the post mortem.
Father Donal O'Mahony, parish priest in Cloyne, said the pensioner was a bachelor who lived in a detached cottage.
"The man was a very shy man, really," he said.
"He kept himself to himself over the years. He would pick up leaves and papers in the area.
"I know he would drop down some daffodils in the springtime that would end up in the church."
