Committees to get more legal power
OIREACHTAS committees are to be given the power to introduce new legislation.
Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform Brendan Howlin revealed that under proposals to strengthen the committees, every fourth sitting week of the Dail would also be devoted to their work.
Speaking in the Dail yesterday, Mr Howlin said that while the number of committees should be reduced, their powers would be strengthened to investigate matters of grave public interest.
"They will have the power to introduce legislation themselves, rather than simply scrutinise Bills introduced by the Government," he said.
