College fear for special needs pupils

Katherine Donnelly, Education Editor

STUDENTS with special educational needs are not getting enough support to help them go to college, according to new research.

Although the number of higher education students declaring a disability increased five-fold in 10 years, they still face barriers to participation.

The National Council for Special Education (NCSE) has called for a national policy to assist in the transition to post-school education for these students.

NCSE chief executive Teresa Griffin said there was still some work to be done on how to best support students with special needs leaving school – barriers included lack of information on courses and access to appropriate supports to cope with academic and social demands.
