Colleagues gagged as Callely ban begins
EMBATTLED senator Ivor Callely's suspension from the Seanad began yesterday -- and his colleagues have been banned from commenting about his controversial case.
The former Fianna Fail senator's legal action -- aimed at quashing a finding that he misrepresented his normal place of residence as Kilcrohane, Bantry, Co Cork, rather than his home in Clontarf, Dublin to claim expenses -- will begin in the High Court next Tuesday.
The investigation into his mobile-phone expenses claims by a Seanad committee is on hold for now, pending the outcome of that case.
Mr Callely was not present in the Seanad chamber yesterday when senators formally agreed to instruct lawyers to defend the legal proceedings.
The Cathaoirleach of the Seanad, Pat Moylan, warned senators against speaking about the impending court case in the chamber.
"I would ask each member to refrain from commenting on the case itself, which is before the courts," he said.
