The bogus callers turn up at houses and claim to be employees of local authorities, carrying out checks on gas, power or water supplies.

While the elderly occupant is speaking to one of the callers, another enters the house and steals cash or jewellery, according to the gardai.

A number of thefts have been carried out in the greater Dublin area, while a similar scam has been under way around Castledermot, Co Kildare.

One suspect for the Dublin thefts is described as 5ft 7in tall, 24-26 years old, with round face, clean shaven, a Dublin accent, well spoken and wearing dark clothing. The second suspect is 5ft 5in tall, about 21 years old and has dark hair.
