Coast Guard stations to remain open

TWO of the country's three Coast Guard stations threatened with closure are to remain open.
An independent report had recommended the closure of stations at Malin Head, Co Donegal, and Valentia Island, Co Kerry, and the transfer of all services to Dublin.
Transport Minister Leo Varadkar said, however, he would keep all three stations open and look at making savings within the service instead.
"The retention of Malin Head and Valentia Island in the national Coast Guard stations network is a victory for common sense," said Fine Gael TD Joe McHugh, who attended a meeting in support of Donegal staff last month.
