Cleaning cutbacks 'will hit Gathering'

THE multi-million euro investment in The Gathering next year will be undermined if cleaning levels in towns and cities are not maintained, the head of Irish Business Against Litter has warned.

Speaking at an international conference of environmental experts in Brussels, Tom Cavanagh said he was concerned that local authorities might cut back on cleaning schedules in 2013. This would jeopardise the success of The Gathering, he warned.

Rehab centre facing uncertain future

IRELAND'S largest addiction treatment provider is facing an uncertain future because of financial difficulties. At any one time, Cuan Mhuire provides residential detox programmes to 600 recovering addicts at its five centres across the country.

Sister Consilio Fitzgerald, the charity's founder, blamed dwindling public donations and paltry state assistance for the difficulties, which she says have coincided with an unprecedented demand for alcohol and drug addiction services.

Clonmel gets set for comedy festival

CLONMEL looks set to be more than a barrel of laughs with The Rubberbandits, Pat Shortt and Edinburgh Festival-winner David O'Doherty among the headliners for the sixth Bulmers Comedy Festival.

Others set to feature from November 22 to 25 include Tom Stade, Patrick Monahan and Tony Law, along with participants from Canada, Norway, the US and the UK.

Budget to devastate disability group

A LEADING Irish disability support group has warned that its services will be left devastated by a possible 5pc budget cut in 2013.

The COPE Foundation, a non-profit group that works with the intellectually disabled, warned that it had no idea how it would cope with further budget cuts after struggling to balance the books following a €2.1m funding loss this year.
