A LOCAL authority has received a special award for its hosting of the Tall Ships Races 2011, an event enjoyed by 500,000 people.
Chambers Ireland awarded Waterford City Council the Festival of the Year award for its role in delivering the four-day event.
Accepting the award on behalf of Waterford City Council, deputy mayor of Waterford Hilary Quinlan said: "Hosting an event like the Tall Ships Races is a huge undertaking for any city and especially one of Waterford's compact scale.
"To host the Tall Ships successfully twice in six years is a mark of what we are capable of when the city unites."
The award was granted at the ninth annual Excellence in Local Government Awards.
