City council urged to save house

THERE were renewed calls yesterday on Limerick City Council to acquire one of the city's cultural landmarks following another fire at the former home of author Kate O'Brien.

Boru House, a derelict period red-brick property on Mulgrave Street, has been on the market for several years with a price tag of €1.4m.

However, former Limerick mayor John Gilligan believes the slump in property prices may allow the local authority to buy the house, before "it eventually burns down".
