Cigarette price rise 'a missed opportunity'

ASH Ireland has expressed disappointment that the 10c increase on a packet of cigarettes is not higher.
"This is a missed opportunity as there was a general acceptance among the general public that there would be a significant increase on the price of tobacco," the group said.
Dr Ross Morgan, consultant respiratory physician at Blackrock Clinic, said the Government has "once again" missed the opportunity to significantly increase the price of tobacco, which is "well recognised" as the principal means of encouraging smokers to quit and discouraging young people from experimenting with tobacco.
Tobacco use causes 5,000 deaths every year from a range of cardiovascular, cancerous and other diseases, he said.
