Several thousand euro was stolen from a church, including money from the Easter collection and the contents of Trócaire boxes that had just been returned.

Gardaí in Ennistymon, Co Clare, are investigating the theft as well as criminal damage at a church in the town. The raid is believed to have taken place between 8pm on Sunday and 10am yesterday.

It is understood the contents of dozens of Trócaire Lenten Campaign boxes were stolen, as well as Easter mass donations.

Inspector Paul Slattery appealed for witnesses to come forward. "We don't have any description of the culprit or culprits at the moment but we are looking at security footage from premises in the local area," Insp Slattery said.

Parish priest Fr Des Forde said: "It's awful to see something like this happening. There was no damage to the religious side of the church but Trócaire and Easter collection money was taken."
